If you are embarking on your senior year of high school this fall, you have likely already been bombarded with the endless questions about your future college plans. You are often expected to know exactly what you want to study, where you want to go, and exactly how you want your career to play out.

Daunting choices are at every turn and all you know for sure is that you love the harp and want to continue developing your skills. Great! You have made the most important first step, selecting what you would like to study in college. But now what? How do you decide where to apply? How do you keep track of your auditions? And after all that is said and done, how do you pick the school that is right for you?

Well, we can’t choose your college for you, but we can help you negotiate the often overwhelming Great College Search with our step-by-step guide.

Narrow Your Options

The huge number of college harp programs today—over 130 in our guide—is an embarrassment of riches. How do you narrow down your choices? Where do you even start?

The Internet gives us access to more information about these schools than ever before, but it’s easy to become completely buried in it. Lucky for you, Harp Column has just launched a new online college directory that provides the perfect jumping-off point for your search. You can use this directory to search harp programs in a number of different ways including by key words (like teacher’s name), location, or programs or degrees offered. You can browse small liberal arts colleges, conservatories, or large universities to see details about the programs offered, contact information, and other interesting tidbits. Once you have put together a first list of prospective schools, there are three main points to consider for the next step: the teacher, the program, and the school.

Finding the Right Teacher

As a harpist, the number-one criteria to consider in a college is its harp teacher. If you are unfamiliar with the teacher, then a little research is in order. Ask your current teacher to share her insights and do some Google research as well. Check out how long they’ve been teaching, where else they might teach or have taught, what kind of method they use, and what kind of performing career or academic career they have. By checking out what kind of career each teacher has, you can get an idea of how the teacher’s background and experience might influence your learning. If the teacher is well known for their orchestral work and you are hoping to develop as an orchestral harpist, then that teacher might be an ideal fit for you.

In a perfect world you should try to have a lesson with all of your prospective teachers. If you are unable to have a lesson with them before you apply to the school, some teachers will give you a lesson in the months leading up to your audition, and others will be willing to give you a lesson in the days following your audition. Having a lesson with your prospective teacher is really important. You want to make sure you and your teacher are compatible, as you will be making a four-year commitment to each other. This lesson can also show you on a small scale how much potential growth you could make with this teacher. A teacher can have amazing credentials, but for some reason their teaching style might not mesh with your learning style. It is better to learn this early on than to find out in your first week of classes that you two don’t jibe.

Universities, Colleges, and Conservatories

Next, you want to take a look at the program. Note the difference between a college or university and a conservatory: conservatories tend to be more performance based while colleges and universities will offer more of a balance between performance classes and course work. Some conservatories will only offer performance diplomas, but will give students the option of completing online courses so that they will graduate with both a performance diploma and a bachelor of music degree. As hard as it is to think beyond undergrad, you want to make sure you graduate with the right degree if you are considering grad school (some graduate schools will only accept students who graduate with a bachelor of music degree). It is possible that some schools may not take a diploma equivalent to a bachelor degree. Make sure to read the requirements carefully and ask the college any questions you might have about the degree you’re considering.

As you look at each program, check out what courses you will be required to take. It is standard to have classes in music theory, history, ear-training, etc. but you should also see what else you are required to take. Perhaps there is a heavy English requirement, or you need to take a certain number of arts and sciences classes. While you are doing this, you should be able to see how much performance experience you can expect based on the number of orchestras and ensembles you can be a part of. Course and performance requirements will vary between schools and programs. Also, check what harp-specific classes there are. There might be a weekly harp studio class or harp ensemble. Finding schools with course and performances requirements that interest you and help you achieve your goals will narrow your search.

Another point to consider in each program is how many lessons you will receive per semester and how long each lesson will be. It could range from hour-long weekly lessons to two-hour lessons every other week. This often changes depending on the performance and travel schedule of your teacher. You will want to consider how the lesson schedule will match your learning style. Are you someone who thrives on consistent regular weekly lessons, or someone who would rather have more time to independently work between lessons?

Finally, you will want to consider the school itself. As vain as this sounds, you might want to think about how the school will look on your resume—especially if you plan on going to grad school. Everyone knows the Juilliard School because of its excellent reputation, but what about some of the smaller schools? This is not to suggest that you should only apply to schools with well-known names and reputations. But if you end up at a school with a bad reputation for academic excellence, no matter how high your GPA is, it will not be as impressive when applying to grad schools, should you plan to go that route.

Make a list, check it twice

Use the following checklist to build a folder of information about each school:

  • Information about the school
  • Information about the music program and harp teacher(s)
  • Information about the application process
  • Information about the audition process
  • All correspondence with the school including e-mails, dates and times of phone calls, etc.
  • All dates and deadlines
  • Audition requirements and what repertoire you are playing
  • Application requirements including transcripts and letters of recommendation
  • Contact information for the school including its mailing address, e-mail, website, and phone number

Your Short List

When preparing your short list of schools to apply to, try to keep the number reasonable. Remember, you may need to travel to many of these schools and do a live audition. Make sure it is a manageable number, that will allow you some choice should you not get into every school, but also not exhausting you during the audition months.

Get Organized

Once you have come up with your short list, it’s time to get organized. Boring as it sounds, a little organization goes a long way in saving valuable time during your busy senior year. Try creating a folder for each school. In this folder you can keep important information about the school, the application process, and the audition process. Include in the folder all of the audition requirements and what you will be playing. This step should be done as soon as possible so you know what repertoire to be preparing. You can also keep all of your correspondence with the school in this folder. Keep a clear list of all the important dates and deadlines for each school in the front of each folder. Note that you will have to apply to the school (usually an online application) and audition, and these dates and deadlines will be different. In addition, keep all the important dates and deadlines for all the schools on your short list on a calendar dedicated to your college applications. This will help you to see the big picture of what’s due when. You will also want to make a master list of all the school websites, e-mail addresses, and phone numbers. Use the checklist we’ve provided on pg. 35 to make sure you have all the necessary information on hand in your school folder.

Throughout the application and audition process do not be afraid to call the school and ask questions. If you don’t hear back from the school regarding a question or an audition date, give them a call and check in. Remember that they are processing hundreds of applications, and you don’t want to slip between the cracks!

The Audition

Most music programs require an audition in addition to an application. Familiarize yourself with how each school’s audition process works. Some schools will have multiple audition dates and will send out acceptances after the first round of auditions. This means if you have an audition on a later date, all the spots may be filled by the time you audition. This is not the case with each school, so make sure you know how the audition process differs for the schools on your list, and request your audition dates accordingly. Depending on how you best perform, you might want to try to book your auditions in a row so that you do all your traveling at once, or you might want to regroup and have a week or two between each audition. Knowing yourself and your limits is important when working out your audition schedule.

Look carefully at the school’s requirements for audition repertoire. Try to streamline your music selections so that you are not learning multiple programs. If one school requires you to play the Handel Concerto, and another school requires a baroque selection, use the same piece for both! Some schools will allow substitutions for the audition repertoire listed. Make sure you get in touch with the school (and possibly the harp teacher) to get these substitutions approved right away. You really want to be able to show them your stuff! It is a good idea to give yourself the goal of playing a practice recital of your audition repertoire around Christmas.

The college may give you the option of submitting a video audition instead of a live audition. A live audition is always best, but in some instances, time, money, or travel may be a prohibiting factor. Prioritize—if this school is one of your top choices, then a live audition is the best way to go. If a school is one of your back-up choices, and the date conflicts with another audition, or the travel is getting a bit expensive, then consider submitting a video audition. Treat the video as you would a live audition, dress professionally, and do a straight run through of the audition repertoire with no breaks. Make sure you are using high-quality video and audio. You want the audition committee to feel like you are right there in the room with them.

The Big Decision

With your applications submitted and auditions complete, the hard work is behind you, and the acceptance letters are piled up before you. Now comes the big decision—choosing which school to attend.

Earlier we discussed selecting a teacher that would be a good fit for you—one whose career may help you in developing your own career. At this point in your decision process, you might want to ask yourself again about the kind of career you are looking for and how the school can help you achieve that. Are you interested in being a soloist, chamber musician, orchestral musician, or academic? How about becoming a 21st century freelancer and finding your own niche? While you may not set out to be a professional freelancer, you may find yourself crafting your own career as the few available positions in orchestras and in academia are filled. How can your school prepare you for that scenario? It may be that your teacher has a varied career that can help you shape your own path. Or the school’s program offers training in a wide range of styles from classical, to baroque music on authentic instruments, to jazz and improvisational studies, to world music and beyond. But also remember, it is okay to not have your whole life planned out before you head off to undergrad. The next four years are an exploration period for you. You will learn more about yourself and your interests during this time than you ever thought possible. You just want to make sure that the school you select will supply you with the tools and skills to pursue any career path you choose.

Although most of us would love money not to be a factor, it unfortunately plays a big role in the college decisions for most of us. Compare the yearly tuition and living expenses for each potential school. If you have received a scholarship, add that to your equation. Most schools will offer additional grants or entrance scholarships based on grades. In some instances, you may have to wait to apply for financial aid until you accept the offer of admission. You may also wish to compare what kinds of student jobs are available, and especially if you are an international student, you will be limited to the kind of work you can do in another country.

When considering each school, take note of the building in which you will be spending the next four years of your life. Try to tour the school and specifically check out the concert halls and practice rooms. Find out what kind of harps the school has and if there is space for you to keep your harp there if you want to. What kind of neighborhood is the school in? Will you feel safe leaving the building at 11 p.m. after a long day of harping? Are there dorms, or is student housing near by? And is that student housing harp-accessible if you choose to practice in your room? These are a few of the questions you might want to ask yourself when picking your school.

For some of you, the city the school is located in will play a big factor. Check to see if the city has a symphony, opera, and ballet that you can attend. Part of a well-rounded education is being exposed to excellent live music. Depending on the city, there may be opportunities for you to perform outside of school with community groups. Some schools will offer a sort of contracting service giving gigs to students. You may also want to consider whether the city you will be living in will have additional gigs available so you can make a little extra cash.

Talk to students currently enrolled in the program. Ask them any questions you might still have about the school, program, or teacher. This will also allow you to get to know some of the other harpists at the school and to get a better sense of the studio vibe. Just as you want to be compatible with your teacher, you want to find a studio that fits you. Whether you are looking for a supportive environment or thrive best with competition, by talking to current students you will get a more realistic impression of the harp studio. Finally, check out the harp alumni and see where their careers have taken them. If you can talk to some of them as well, ask them how they felt the program and teacher shaped them for their career. Just think, in a few years, that might be you helping another young harpist’s college search! •
