Juan Pablo Contreras releases “Silencio en Juárez”

April 13, 2015

Mexican composer Juan Pablo Contreras has released his new recording Silencio en Juárez on the Albany recording label. The album features his concerto for harp, Ángel Mestizo, performed by Kristi Shade and the Claremont Avenue Chamber Orchestra. Shade also gave the premiere performance of the piece in December, 2014. “This concerto for harp and chamber orchestra is about the journey the harp made from Spain to Mexico during the Spanish conquest,” says Contreras. “Each of the movements illustrates a different stage in the evolution that the harp underwent once it arrived in Mexico, from being an exclusively European instrument, until becoming one of the most iconic folk instruments in the country.” The piece recently won the Arturo Márquez First Composition Contest for Chamber Orchestra.

A CD Release Concert will take place on Thursday, April 30, at the Turtle Bay Music School in New York. (read more)
