    Hi Jerusha,

I got the walnut with walnut veneer soundboard. You can see it here on my page at Northern Harpsong (the Photoshopped neck of the harp in the banner is also my harp).

    Hi Chelsey,

Don’t overlook the Triplett Sierras. I have a 34 that sounds as nice as my teacher’s Dusty 36 (she said so). In fact I was in the bathroom once when we were both playing at the gallery and I heard her tuning and then playing wonderful arpeggios up and down and I thought to myself, “I wish the Dusty wasn’t too wide for my arms, listen to that sound!” I came out of the bathroom and was going to say something to that effect to her, only to see that she was playing MY harp! mine is two years old now and has developed a beautiful tone. The Sierras come in a 36 string model now, and I believe are still just under or around $2000.00. They have Camac levers which are awesome, too.

    My two cents,
    Leigh

It wouldn’t let me post the entire link, but I think you can probably find it from there.

Definitely size does matter here. I have tried both of these harps. I say tried, because I am a short adult with short arms and could not reach the lower strings of the Marion. I could reach all the strings on the Merlin and to me it had a much richer and louder sound. If your student is on the small side, the Merlin might be a better fit. This is my experience only, and I offer it as a guide for something to look out for.

Have you checked out other makes? I’m thinking of Blevins and Triplett, but there are others, too. Don’t rush into a decision, and save more while you are looking. I searched extensively for two years online while I was saving and then traveled to Somerset and played harps all day before I finally decided on mine. Blevins wasn’t at Somerset, so I didn’t get to try any of those, but I am happy with my Triplett Sierra 34. I didn’t like the Crescendo because it didn’t have the Camac levers, didn’t have the same resonance, and was harder for me to reach around (I have very short arms). Even with the slight “staving” of the back I could not reach the two lowest strings.

I also think that with new, you aren’t inheriting previous bumps and dings whose consequences are yet to be seen. I don’t know what the warranty is on the CPO harps, but I do like Triplett’s seven year warranty.

    Just some stuff to consider.
    Happy hunting!

…just about anywhere they can get to without too much trouble, for just about anyone, as long as they are paid and not out in the rain!

…in front of an audience when possible.

    …at someone else’s wedding!

Yes, I use a fat crochet hook to start with for the hats I sell (wooden size L or M), and slide one of those foam pencil cushions they sell at Staples over the hook. I used to be able to crochet four or five hats a day, but lately can only do three or four if I push it. The next day I wake up with lots of pain in my hands, but when I have two weeks to make thirty-five hats for an order, on top of other work, I don’t have much choice!

I got my Eve in ’96 and the pins are quite tight. I recently started renting it out to a new member of our group. she doesn’t have a tuner yet, so we tune it each week when we meet and it hardly needs adjusting. I’m glad she is getting played more often, but I could never totally part with her!

I’ve been a fan of Dougie McLean’s “Caledonia” for a long time and went to youtube to hear Celtic Woman’s version. Sounds like Celtic Muzak to me. Ick. Celtic Thunder does a version much closer to Dougie’s, and in my opinion it’s much better, more heartfelt. When Celtic Woman first came out, I thought they were great. Now they sound way too “canned”. (IMHO)
