Wales International Harp Competition and Festival

The Fourth Wales International Harp Festival will be held on April 1- 7, 2018 at Galeri, Caernarfon to celebrate the 90th birthday of the legendary harpist, Dr. Osian Ellis CBE, and the enormous contribution that he made to music-making over a period of 70 years.
There will be concerts, competitions, master-classes, lectures, fun classes for absolute beginners, harp exhibitions and much more…
Harpists from all over the world will come to Caernarfon to join in the celebrations, and make friends through music.
Chief Musician Competition
(Age 30 and under)
A balanced programme no longer than 20 minutes’ duration showing different styles and to include at least one of the following works that were dedicated to the Festival President, Dr Osian Ellis:
- Malcolm Arnold: Fantasy for Harp
- Benjamin Britten: Suite for Harp
- Alun Hoddinott: Sonata for Harp
- Paul Patterson: Spiders
A balanced programme no longer than 25 minutes’ duration, including:
- New work by Gareth Glyn (For sale from Curiad or CGWM’s office) (Length: 5’50”)
No pieces from Stage 1 can be repeated.
Stage 3 Final
A performance of:
- Claude Debussy: Sonata for Flute, Viola and Harp
- Own choice solo piece no longer than 15 minutes’ duration (which was not performed in the previous stages).
First: £5,000 (donated by Rolant Hughes)
(Age 19 and under)
A programme showing various musical styles, no longer than 15 minutes’ duration to include the new commissioned piece by Catrin Finch: Môr Arianrhod. (Also sold by CGWM: 01286 685 230)
A programme, no longer than 20 minutes’ duration of varying styles , to include at least one of the following works:
- John Parry: Any one of the Four Lessons for Harp (1761)
- Albert Zabel: Am Springbrunnen
- York Bowen: Arabesque
No pieces from stage 1 can be repeated in stage 2.
Three equal awards of £1500 each
(Age 13 and under)
Free choice programme no longer than 7 minutes’ duration.
Free choice programme (to include one piece from Wales) no longer than 12 minutes. May include 3 minutes from Stage 1.
Three awards of £500 each.
World Music Competition
Solo or group, can include any instruments or voice(s) but must have at least one harp. Maximum 5 members. The harp is not limited to the Western kind and includes Kora, Ku-cheng Koto etc.
Programme of own choice music; no longer than 20 minutes.
Performance of a 20 minute programme (can include up to 5 minutes from stage 1).
