I am performing Brahms’ Four Songs for 2 horns, harp and women’s voices this week. Since some of the note groupings reflect the five fingers a pianist would use, I re-beamed my part to reflect where a harpist’s hands would separate left from right. I don’t know if there are editions which are easier to read, but the notes are crammed together in the part I have. I did a wee bit of editing as well, some of which are only necessary if the speed gets going too fast. Anyone else have some comments on how to handle this part? It sure is a beautiful piece.

There also seem to be a few misprints in my part. I would be curious to know if there is a corrected edition.

I have made markings for the piece, we can discuss it. Cynthia Otis recorded it beautifully, and she would have markings as well.

Is your part from the Peters edition?

No, it is published by N. Simrock in Berlin, and copyrighted by Schott & Co.in the UK. i am going to get a copy of the Breitkopf and Hartel version tomorrow.

I suggest comparing the different editions for corrections. Be sure the choral parts match the instrumental parts.

I bet not too many people know that Hindemith wrote An Old Irish Air for choir and harp. Quite a nice companion piece to this. Cynthia Otis made a superb recording of the Brahms.

The Breitkopf and Hartel part is exactly the same as the Simrock, except much easier to read. The Simrock is hand-written, whereas the B & H is done by music software. I still suspect some mistakes, but the notes are exactly the same.
